beyond the bright lights GRAMMY Foundation® offers wide range of GRAMMY in the Schools® Programs L ights dim, music trumpets, curtains open, and the spectacle and majesty begins! This is what most of us imagine when we hear the word “GRAMMY®.” No doubt that the annual GRAMMY Awards® presentation signals the glamorous recognition of outstanding achievement in the music industry, but the GRAMMY Foundation® offers much more than what you’ve seen on television. For the thousands of high school students and hundreds of music teachers who benefit from GRAMMY in the Schools® programs each year, the GRAMMY Foundation and its music education programs are truly worthy of applause. GRAMMY Camp® offers selected high school students an interactive residential summer music experience. Focusing on all aspects of commercial music, this unique opportunity provides instruction by industry professionals in an immersive creative environment with cutting-edge technology in professional facilities. Recent GRAMMY Campers have gone on to release recordings, start their own companies, burnish their performing careers with tours and go on to top–notch music programs at universities across the U.S. Former GRAMMY Camp student Lindsey Iverson says, “GRAMMY Camp was an unforgettable experience. We were able to meet face–to–face with music industry professionals on a personal level. Being a part of the camp was a helpful networking tool and great way to dive into the opportunities that the music industry has to offer.” Lindsey’s parents, Gail and Lars Iverson, agree stating, “We were amazed at the amount of knowledge about the recording industry that our daughter acquired in just a few days at GRAMMY Camp. Using her newly acquired tech skills, she created a CD of an original song that she had composed. She produced the CD in the camp recording lab — and she, herself, had performed all the instrumental accompaniment and the vocals!” Just as the GRAMMY Awards recognize excellence in recording, the GRAMMY Foundation’s GRAMMY Signature Schools program recognizes top public high schools across the country for outstanding commitment to their music education programs. Each of the GRAMMY Signature Schools receives an award and monetary grant to benefit its music program. The Recording Academy® and the GRAMMY Foundation will be announced. Established to recognize music educators for their contributions to the musical landscape and their positive influence on their students’ musical experiences, the award is open to current U.S. music teachers from kindergarten through college. The winner will be flown to Los Angeles to accept the award, attend the GRAMMY Awards ceremony and receive a $10,000 honorarium. Nine additional finalists will also receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10 finalists will receive matching grants. The honorariums and grants provided to the finalists and schools are made possible by the generosity and support of the GRAMMY Foundation’s Education ChampionsConverse, Ford Motor Company Fund, General Mills Box Tops For Education, and Journeys. Anyone can nominate a teacher at GRAMMYMusicTeacher.com. These GRAMMY in the Schools initiatives are truly helping to inspire and educate the next generation of music makers. Students and schools interested in participating in the GRAMMY Camp and GRAMMY Signature Schools programs can apply at GRAMMYintheSchools.com.
