finance fundamentals leading students down the path to future financial independence I t’s never too soon for students to start learning about financial planning. A solid understanding of basic financial concepts such as saving, inflation, wise spending habits and asset allocation helps prepare youth of all ages for future financial success. That’s why Walt Disney Imagineering partnered with the financial experts at T. Rowe Price to create The Great Piggy Bank Adventure®, a special exhibit at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World® Resort, that makes learning about finance a little more fun. Through a series of interactive games, The Great Piggy Bank Adventure allows participants to make tough choices that will affect their financial plans, use different investment strategies for growing assets, and choose and accomplish their own personal financial goals. The game begins by asking participants to choose their financial goal: Plan for a vacation? Save for college? Retirement? Once the goal is identified, the players move onto the next game, Save It. In this game, participants learn that saving requires active participation and engagement, and that every penny spent takes away from their future savings. Next, participants are taught to stay ahead of inflation as they use levers to navigate a path that leads 62 | N extra credit to saving more money. And finally, players learn about the importance of diversification. In this final game, participants are shown how to spread their investment around, illustrating why it’s best “not to have all your eggs in one basket.” Together, these playful exercises lay the groundwork for a better understanding of basic financial concepts. Students and families can continue to play together by downloading the mobile app or visiting the online game at GreatPiggyBankAdventure.com. Families who play these games together hopefully open a new doorway to future financial discussions and education opportunities.
