Disney Extra Credit - Fall 2013 - (Page 12)

a touching reunion former student reconnects with his childhood mentor A great teacher inspires students to be passionate about learning and provides them with the tools necessary to follow their dreams into adulthood. They stretch their students’ minds, open the window to untold possibilities, present constructive challenges and so much more. These teachers are the ones who stick in our memories and who serve as a guiding voice as we face the obstacles that lie ahead. And, sometimes students are even lucky enough to reconnect with their favorite teacher later in life. Tim Hill, Director of Performing Arts and Education Programs for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, had such an experience when he reunited with his favorite educator, his third and fourth 12 | N extra credit grade teacher, Anne Cook. Anne was on a family vacation at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Florida when she contacted Tim to plan a reunion. This was a chance for Tim to reunite with one of the most influential people in his life: The woman he credits with igniting his passion for learning and ultimately fostering his success in life today. “She really inspired us through art, giving us opportunities to do things that we normally wouldn’t do,” Tim said. “She took us to Disney on Parade. It was really inspiring, and she took that performance and brought it back to the classroom. She talked about all the people it took to make up that performance, from musicians and dancers and singers to lighting techs. She brought that theatre show to life and made us understand what it took to make it happen.” In addition to bringing lessons to life in creative ways, Anne encouraged Tim, as well as her other students, to pursue their dreams, wherever they may lead. For Tim this meant following his dreams to Florida, where he applied Anne’s lessons on the importance of always using creativity to launch his career in the entertainment industry, working for The Walt Disney Company. And, Tim has never forgotten the importance of Anne’s teachings in the years since, stating, “She inspired us all to say ‘You know, you can do that. You really can do whatever you want to do.’”
