music education excellence provided by the National Association for Music Education A t any given time, a music classroom is alive with electric sounds and pulsating rhythms. Most observers experience the music and make a determination of quality based on their personal preferences, but there is so much more happening than what meets the ear of the casual listener. An excellent performance is the product of comprehensive and sequential music instruction. The learning that takes place extends beyond the music classroom and, in fact, even beyond the school experience. Defining and demonstrating how learning occurs and what constitutes excellence is a challenge for arts educators and advocates. Increasingly, school administrators and leaders have to make tough decisions about program funding. A superior performance at a state festival is not necessarily a guarantee that the program will be adequately funded in the next year. Taking steps to demonstrate excellence in music education helps to keep arts education alive in the school setting. Strong arts education programs can be an inspiration to students, parents and their surrounding communities. How do we define excellence in arts education? In any industry it’s important to have benchmarks. Nearly all educators in this country are now being compelled to define instructional excellence. The National Association 44 | N extra credit
